Evaluations and Screening

What Happens During an Evaluation

During an evaluation, the caregiver and child will be escorted back to a private treatment room. A caregiver interview will be completed, including discussion of their medical and developmental history. A discussion of how the child performs and engages in age-appropriate activities. These may include:

  • Playing
  • Mobility
  • Ball skills
  • Socialization
  • Language
  • Communication
  • Feeding and nutrition
  • Sleeping
  • Hygiene - (bathing, washing hands, brushing teeth, managing finger/toe nails, brushing hair, etc.)
  • Toileting
  • Dressing
  • School
  • Handwriting

We will have a discussion of the child's strengths and what they enjoy doing.

We will then complete a standardized assessment(s) that are appropriate based on the child's age, developmental level, and overall deficits. These may assess their strength, coordination, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory processing ability, visual motor integration, language, communication, feeding skills, and oral motor skills.

Additionally, clinical observation of motor movements, postures, and motor planning during play will occur throughout the evaluation.

An evaluation usually takes about an hour.

Therapy sessions are scheduled at the same day and time each visit (unless the parent or therapist needs to change from time to time) and can be 30-60 minutes in length, depending on the needs of the child. If a child is receiving more than one therapy, we will accommodate scheduling as it allows.
